Wal-Mart - Good vs. Bad

The giant retailer store Wal-Mart has a history of over forty years of successful business. Its first store opened in 1962 in Arkansas and in 1979 it already switches to a computerized inventory system that tracked individual items. This innovation was a success at that time, when such technologies were not widely implemented. They were beginners in this sphere, putting a lot of money into development of IT improvements in their supply chain. Year1983 the bar codes are printed on most goods, Wal-Mart introduces checkout scanners in all its stores. This enables them to track inventory numbers for individual items at the point of sale which in turn allowed headquarters to more easily sum up sales and inventory data at its centralized IT department. In five years Mal-Mart has another innovative option in mind in order to improve the inventory data collection and processing, they are installing satellite communications network.
They have been very successful in managing their inventory supply system running smoothly, as they have been investing heavily and what is more important earlier then their rivals in cutting edge technology. This way of conducting business led Wal-Mart in being a number one supplier not only to customers but in a business-to-business environment.

With the creation of its first e-commerce Web store Wal-Mart gained even larger share of their market. It used to use a dial-up internet line in order to process orders from their suppliers; the same process had to be done from suppliers' side as well. Starting 2002 Wal-Mart again changes the way of communicating with its suppliers and requires them to install a new electronic data interchange system. This EDI system is provided Isoft Corp., Dallas, and offers business to use AS2 software package. Needless to say that this software gives a lot of advantages, otherwise Wal-Mart would not even consider using it. This new installed system allows businesses to have faster, cheaper and more accurate transactions between suppliers and retailers.
A lot more could be said about Wal-Mart's successful strategic implementations and love of the customers. Their philosophy can be summed up by the Wal-Mart's father Sam Walton: "The secret of successful retailing is to give your customers what they want." It is a very appealing statement for the customers, who want their favorite "low prices everyday ". There is also the other side of the coin which explains the Wal-Mart phenomenon better than the simple concept of law prices. The major problem associated with Wal-Mart that has been roaring throughout America is the employee issue. A simple example of unfairness toward the potential workers is a hiring process. Many workers admitted they have had to sign forms agreeing that they would not support any effort to unionize the store, which is a definite violation of federal law. In case if someone refuses to sign the paper he/she will not be employed, taking into consideration that most of those who are trying to get a job are not very skilled or educated and most probably have agree to the rules.

Although Wal-Mart has a huge assortment of goods, recently it has expanded its sales in the grocery sector. This strategic move caused a lot of problems with the workers of this division as most of them are unionized, thus protected in many instances. On the other hand Wal-Mart being the biggest private employer in the US and refusing its workers to enter unions has more advantages than any existent union. Taking for instance California, where Wal-Mart Corporation built a number of famous Supercenters, union members of grocery sector were on strikes for months trying to defend their rights for a decent wage and health plan. The result however was disappointing, as their employers had to give in to the new conditions of business brought in by Wal-Mart. For the grocers all over the States not only in California, the wages have been cut down and health plans annihilated. The issue of Mal-Mart affecting so much the whole retail and grocery industry in America, and other countries where it operates, is a problem that has to be solved in the nearest future. Despite that the crisis of Wal-Mart employees is a huge concern.
In his recent speech H. Lee Scott Jr., the chief executive officer of Wal-Mart, argued that Wal-Mart is a force for good in the economy. He claimed that the company is good to its employees paying high wages. He gave a number average 10$ per hour, which is double of a federal minimum wage. He also mentioned that their wages are compatible with most of the retailers throughout the country, with only one exception of those in rural areas. The real picture however looks "a bit" different. Those 10$ have little to do with ordinary workers, because they were derived from the sum of all wages, which means that million dollar salaries of the executives were considered as well. In reality an average sales clerk at Wal-Mart gets $8.50 an hour, or about $14,000 a year, which is about a $1,000 under the government's definition of the poverty level for a family of three. April Hotchkiss, for instance who interviewed by the Nation magazine, makes $8.33 an hour as a clerk in a Pueblo, Colorado, Supercenter. She had to have her healthcare costs paid for by the state's program for the needy. She says that she dreams of the day she can stop working and shopping at Wal-Mart. April confided: "Whenever I'm able to quit this place, and find something better, I'm never going to set foot in another such store again". This is a look from the inside of the "low prices" candy. It is painful to realize that we, who shop in Wal-Mart, are depriving others of being treated decently. Or is it a problem of greediness of those in charge of the corporation?

Another point being argued by the Chairman was the claim that Wal-Mart is just like everybody else. Certainly they are, after they have made everyone near them turn down the wages and lower overall working conditions. Wal-Mart has been the cause of many supermarkets closing down and consequently people losing their jobs, because they are building Supercenters which display appealing prices. It follows that those who have lost jobs have to find them some place else and often they end up as a Wal-Mart employee. The logic behind their moves is apparent however labor unions and other social organizations have been helpless protesting against the giant.

Lee Scott mentioned that Wal-Mart is doing great at offering their workers to have a full time job, while other retailers mainly supply hourly positions. Now, it has to come clear that for Wal-Mart the term "full time job" means different number of hours than for the rest of the world. In Wal-Mart they define it as a 34 hour week, instead of common 40. Clearly the company incurs lesser spending, for the employee it means that they will hardly get any premiums for health insurance that they are offered. According to Simon Head, director of the Project on Technology and the Workplace at the Century Foundation less than half of Wal-Mart's employees can afford even the company's least-expensive health plan. This depressing information can only mean that millions of people live below poverty line and can hardly make enough money to ever get out of this catch 22. It is true that Sam Walton once figured out how to make money out of poverty of others and how to make more poverty to grow even more. Although Wal-Mart claims that absolutely everybody shops at their stores even people with more then $100,000 a year, the research conducted by Andrew Franklin, an economist at the University of Connecticut, proves different. A 2003 study showed that 23 percent of Wal-Mart Supercenter customers live on incomes of less than $25,000 a year. More than 20 percent of Wal-Mart shoppers have no bank account, long considered a sign of dire poverty and almost half of Wal-Mart Supercenter customers are blue-collar workers and their families, 20 percent are unemployed or elderly.

With all the technological virtues brought by Wal-Mart corporation into modern business world one cannot but agree that it's presence on the market has pushed many economies to a higher levels. Their innovative ideas and creative solutions have proved that customers can be satisfied by the goods offered at lower prices. We have to ask ourselves though, what is this "lower" price that somebody else has to pay? The multiplicity of this issue cannot be solved easily, rather many forces have to come together to protect those who are in need.

The Best Nursing Schools and What They Offer

When it comes to Nursing Degrees, the right school can make a big difference. If you want the best education for your dollar, do yourself a favor and research the Top Nursing Schools and find out as much as you can before you make your decision.

Competition between Nursing Schools for student enrollment is great today. With competition comes value.

Larger cities will have Nursing Schools with greater access to Nursing Internship programs at large hospitals. Public transportation in larger cities is an easy and cheap way for students to get to school, work, and home. Schools located in larger cities generally give students more than an education in the field of choice, they are able to offer more services. Schools in big cities seem to offer more student services and activities as well.

The decision on what school to choose will include many factors. The courses offered, the quality of the teaching staff, their job placement records, and even the earnings of past graduates. Each situation is different and each student will have his or her own important factors to consider.

The best thing to do is to decide on a field of interest and then find a Nursing School to meet the requirements of that specialty. There are almost as many fields of Nursing as there are Nursing Schools! Some fields to consider are: Elder Care Nursing, Family Care Nursing, Hospital Nursing, Private Duty Nurses, Home Care Nursing, Operating Room Nurses, Travel Nursing, and so on.

The first thing to do is to figure out what field of Nursing you want to pursue, then pick a Nursing School. Once you have decided on a nursing field, choosing the right Nursing School is much easier. Looking at class topics and school activities will just have more meaning.

The need for qualified Nursing staff today is greater than ever. The population in America is getting older and will be needing more quality health care providers in the coming years. Unless schools can rapidly turn out the needed health care graduates, the ability to locate needed medical professionals to fill the necessary jobs will just not be possible.

Understanding the factors that go into the decision on where to attend Nursing School is as important to your success as the actual degree! The most important decision is on the choice of careers, the school to attend will come out of that choice. With the right education, anything is possible! Go out there and achieve!

Secret of Engineering Textbook

This interesting article addresses some of the key issues regarding getting to know more about engineering textbook such as how they are written and general type of their structure. A careful reading of this article could make a big difference in how you think about engineering textbook and particularly useful for you if you are the one that looking for an engineering textbook for your study. Once you begin to move beyond basic background information of it, you begin to realize that there's more interesting aspects of engineering textbook that maybe useful for you than you may have first thought.

In general, there are two broad types of engineering textbooks in terms of content and writing structure. The first one I rather call it curriculum-focused which highly aims to write about what engineering students want for their studies to complete a qualification. Therefore the content inside seem not deviates even a bit from the scope of the content or exactly on what the study courses are outline. The second one is, of course, what I called not 100% curriculum-focused. They were normally written by authors who think that their books should have more content than what student's need to complete study. They need some kind of information that help them when they go to outside world and compete with their competitors in other states in the open job market.

So the information authors gave inside the book may be some kind of true experience and learning point from real working environment that they would like to give point of view to readers. However, there is a third type of engineering textbook that I also want to mention about, which is the completely tailor-made for preparing the students merely for the university exam. This kind of textbooks is what kind of highly specific for only one group of students, so content may be full of detail and notes and guide lines in there. To this type of book, they are generally recommended by teachers themselves or the university for first year students who want to pass the exam. In my personal feeling, it is quite contradict that engineering textbook for students should have comprehensive content detail as well as exposure to the illustrative features of technical engineering vocabularies, but these kind of "book for examination" is only a kind of tools which only to present material, which will help students prepare for the examination and writers seem to have no concern about it.

As a result, when a university tend to promote or lecturers recommend this kind of books to students in stead of prescribing them, there will be abundant of "exam-focused" engineering text books. And the authors of these book have done something so wrong, in my opinion, as many of concrete knowledge has been deviated into completely wrong concept of grammar the identification of grammatical categories like object, complement, etc., along with plenty of ungrammatical expressions. Therefore, for you as a student, it is your own judgment to the right type of engineering textbook that most suit to your needs and do not be overwhelm by those which make you become confused.

Hopefully the sections above have contributed to your understanding of engineering textbook. And do not forget to share your new understanding about engineering textbook with others students and they'll thank you for it.

Analysis Of American Schools

The entire article is concerning the wrong path on which American schools appear to be currently. The authors say that although they are not very fond of invasion of computers in schools, technology has to be used in the educational process. They argue not the mere existence of computers but the way they are frequently used. The main point of the article is the importance of computers as the tools in providing excellent education, not driving students' attention away from the core significance of learning. The authors also believe that internet is a sufficient instrument for students and teachers in helping structure educational process and provide a unique feeling of being connected to the rest of the world. The primary subject matter of the paper lies in the belief that computers should direct students and teachers in the right path of education, making it easier, entertaining and at the same time more in-depth for both parties.

The writers of the article claim that computers often have been causing lots of problems for students because of too many unnecessary disruptive things such as glamour and graphics instead of deep serious education. In spite of this disadvantage computers according to authors are the source of major power in educating course. The main issue brought by the authors is that technology should remain in the background and be of secondary importance, while the child and teacher are using it in practical matters. In other words technology should be like a clear window through which person gets a wider view at the outside world. Another point stressed in the article concerns internet connection, which would serve the teacher and students as planning tool, important for scheduling sources and other activities. In doing so both will have a clear idea of where they are and what path they should choose in order to best suit their current position. The importance of software is stressed in the article as the interactive tool for a more vivid and life educational process. The authors claim that each online school should have a so called "comprehensive log" through which everything a child has ever learned and each paper submitted can be looked up.

The issue of disruptive nature of computers in schools discussed by the authors is of big importance, however many factors are overlooked in this instance. The authors just mention that computer and internet often drive away attention of students however the article does not consider such issues as careful teacher's guidance in the classroom. Although students sometimes may not pay attention to what is being taught, it should be stressed that teachers are responsible for order, and educational program should be structured in such a way for children not to be consumed by glamorous ads or unnecessary pictures. Only sites (if computer is logged on to the Web) that are relevant to the subject discussed should be available to viewing. Thus it is clear that author's view at this problem is one sided to some extent and should be viewed from a wider perspective as there are many issues yet to be talked about. The authors are mainly hinting at the negative side of computer use and technology as major distracters in ordinary schools, while trying to contrast that issue with the cure brought by online schools where computers will be used only as helpers in proper situations.

The next big question posed by the authors is the secondary role of technology while the main educational function would be accomplished by teachers and resources such as books. The argument is generally well supported, by statements that computers after all are not to replace the education itself but to facilitate thorough knowledge of students. Authors carefully state that although real books are the best option, they are not against electronic versions which are more practical at times. So, the role of computer according to authors is well defined by providing all necessary materials for learning, and giving them a well structured form. The authors also carefully noted that computers give children great possibilities in entertaining them while learning such subject as geography or history, by providing a 3D picture of the area studied or historical period. In general article approached the issue of computer usage as a medium between the world of knowledge and a student in a coherent manner, stating many advantages and providing vivid examples of actual process.

The importance of well scheduled and balanced educational process is well understood by parents and teachers. The authors state that with computers such perfect situation could be achieved and regulated when needed to meet the needs of both parties. So both know what to do after a certain stage is over, and how it should be evaluated. The articles shows that each step in the process will be recorded and put into system, for easy access in the future, thus it proves the structured form of the online schooling described in the article.

The overall optimistic mood of the article gives a very colorful and hopeful picture of the online education. The authors however have not considered various factors that play negative role in such educational approach, for instance the affordability of such education. Many people in America still do not have computers, and buying one with all necessary educational software could sum up to as much as $3000. Although authors speak about high schools being computerized it is understandable that homework and other group assignments have to be done on the computer using the Net in most cases. Also authors claim that ideally by 2001 America will have perfect schools with wide access to computers and needed software, the real picture shows a drastically different result. Sill a lot of schools lack computers which would satisfy the number of students and appropriate filtering systems, which are unable to give access to information needed.

Peter Schweizer Reagan's War: The Epic Story Of His Forty Year Struggle And Final Triumph

Peter Schweizer in his book Reagan's War: The Epic Story of His Forty Year Struggle and Final Triumph over Communism portrays Ronald Reagan as honorable anti-communist. Every action that Reagan performed Schweizer interpreted as another step against the Soviet Union. Schweizer draws upon "Reagan's private correspondence over the course of forty years, classified documents from six different countries, formative life events largely hidden from the public, [and] his own ideas and words uttered over the course of a half a century" to show that he did in fact "have a well-developed plan and "won the Cold War."
Although, Schweizer had not covered all the issues of Reagan's "interaction" with the Soviet Union and thus demonstrated only his subjective view of the situation. This book is very controversial in terms of how to interpret it. Some people think that it is a well-written masterpiece that shows how a man by his actions was able to result the end of the Cold War. Others think that Reagan was just around when the Cold War came to its final destination. In my opinion, everyone should find his or her personal position about this work only by critical thinking and reasoning.

Now back to the book, Schweizer mentions in the book Reagan's first visit of Moscow that took place during spring 1988. He presents the facts that support his main idea, particularly, how Reagan instructed Gorbachev like "a parent trying to reason with a child." For some reason, Schweizer lefts out Reagan's response to the query if he still considered the Soviet Union to be the Evil Empire that time Reagan replied negatively, explaining that he was talking about some other time, other era. Schweizer lefts out such a weighty evidence for purpose, it simply destroys its main idea. Instead, he likes to mention Reagan talking about the Kremlin as the criminal immoral place. Schweizer is really biased about everything that Reagan said.
The author gets greatly upset about any situation that he thinks the U.S. concedes to the Soviet Union, for instance, when Henry Kissinger approved the sale of advanced computers to Moscow. He says that the U.S. gave up to much to Moscow when the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty were signed. For Schweizer those were significant steps back in destroying the communism that he is so obnoxious about. It really seems that he just is not able to forgive American Government such mistakes.

Schweizer intensely gets into showing how great is Ronald Reagan in fighting the communism that he does not even recall the obvious evidence of troubles for the U.S. For instance, Schweizer mentions invasion of Grenada as the shocking setback for the Soviets and Reagan's ability to use military when needed. However, there is not a spot in the book where the author mentions the bombing of the Marine camp in Beirut that took lives of American soldiers. Facts like that significantly decrease the credibility of the author and at such points the assumption of the author's objectivity starts equaling to zero along with the desire to trust the whole book. I once heard some of my teachers say "Never trust the author." and this book appears to be the best example when the author can not be trusted and only critical thinking and evaluation of particular facts and their outcomes would generate fair view of the issue.
The worst in Schweizer's writing is that he tries to refuse that Reagan increased the military and careless talks that almost caused the Soviets to launch the nuclear attack on the U.S. to prevent the nuclear attack that they thought Reagan was going to fire at them.
Very interesting thing happened when one of the professional book reviewers checked the trustfulness of some endnotes that Schweizer used. It actually turned out that some of them simply do not exist. For example, Schweizer asserts that "Likewise, Foreign Minister Gromyko dismissed such paranoia, explaining that the Americans would never strike first, but only in response to aggression." To prove that it is Gromyko's quote, Mr. Schweizer cites a reference to pages 522-23 of Anatoly Dobrynin's memoir that is called In Confidence. When checked, there is no Gromyko or his quote. There is, however, Dobrynin's claim that Ustinov (Soviet Minister of Defense) believed "that Reagan administration was actively preparing for war." That really destroys the credibility of the author that he tried to establish with the reader.
It is now obvious that both leaders, Reagan and Gorbachev, began to fear opposition's and own nuclear weapon. First move made the Soviet leader when started to greatly reduce the number nuclear weapons; however, Reagan's administration followed up and got engaged in collaboration with the Soviet Union. Both governments were greatly concerned about the possibility of unintentional use of the weapon that could simply result the disaster. If one side had even unintentionally used the weapon, another side would immediately respond with the attack. I think that it was just good reasoning and vision of possible greatly unwanted outcomes. Schweizer obviously had a completely different view of this particular situation. He fully rejects the possibility of basic reorientation of the American Government towards the Soviet Union; instead, he indicates the slightest change in "diplomatic tone" that has nothing to do the strategy against Moscow.

According to Schweizer, when the "aging lion" first encountered the "young tiger" in Geneva in 1985, Reagan "established the high ground." The Soviet leader soon began "zeroing in on Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative," because it "provoked passions of fear in Gorbachev." Missing in Schweizer's book the actual Gorbachev's words to Reagan about SDI, reported in his Memoirs: "I think you should know that we have already developed a response. It will be effective and far less expensive than your project, and be ready for use in less time."
Reagan's War: The Epic Story of His Forty Year Struggle and Final Triumph over Communism is full of errors that for some reason the author has allowed to be in the book in the first place. It has only two logical reasons: the author unintentionally made some mistakes (but I think it is very close to impossible to be mistaken when writing a book like that) or he simply made up some endnotes to support his idea in order to make ideologists happy (or maybe he thought that leaving out some facts will make his book more popular among people and make sales better because a lot of people read and learn only what they want to know but not the actual truth).
My another concern is how could Schweizer access the Soviet archives? I think even now, fifteen years after the fall of the Soviet Union even the Russian scholars do not have a complete access to the materials of the Soviet archives, nevertheless, Schweizer uses many of sources from Soviet archives for his book. Personally I think that Russians do not want any outsiders to look in their in their "trash can" because there are probably a great number of references that can impact even modern relationship of two countries.

As I have mentioned in the beginning of my paper, different people have different opinions about Mr. Schweizer's book. It is up to every single person what position about the book to take. The matter of choice is all that matters: some may choose to simply believe in what they just read and not even question that but some will choose to doubt and try to find counter-arguments and generate personal opinions about the topic. Now it is very popular to question everything. We have a number of scholars that question Bible for example and still have not achieved some consensus what is the right way to interpret it and actually look at the book. I believe, that in any case, with any book, we have to look at both sides of the coin and choose the one that best suites us.
